Wild Swedish synthpop group Icona Pop have recently released their new music video for the song 'girlfriend' which incorporates lyrics from Tupac's 'Me and my Girlfriend'. The song exudes a sense of female solidarity and is very upbeat and like a crazy, dance-pop version of Tupac's. The song includes a lot of enthusiastic 'nanananas', solid dance beats and echo voice effects. It's certainly meant to be a fun, care-free type of track which can be easily danced to and enjoyed, for example 'I wanna feel the sun, the waves' evokes a sense of desirable freedom that I'm sure we all want at some point, and the track is successful in achieving that sense of escapism. However, even if I haven't got you interested so far, you'll want to see this whimsically experimental music video:
The music video screams girl-anthem with added psychedelic triangles, crossover pictures, funky frames, and added texts saying 'girlfriend' incase you didn't already get the theme of the video. There's so many lazers, fields and triangles that it's easy to get caught up in the video and think you've been caught in some trippy daydream - But, I suppose that's what they were going for as it fits in with the whole theme of the song. There's no doubt the video is interesting (at some point there's a sledge on top of a train?) and it's enjoyable to let yourself 'go' to the video and the song and the notion of two girl(friend)s hitting the road together to enjoy life is one I'm sure many people would be envious of. All in all, it's fun, it's quirky, it's silly (love the bikes towards the end) and it's easy to listen to and get all psyched up over. Well worth a watch and a listen if you're into electro-pop and are looking for your next anthem to sing with your 'girlfriends'.
