The latest episode of The Great British Bake Off marked the week of Bumbling Biscuits and tedious Traybakes that left even the most formidable bakers, so far, stumbling and struggling. A week which could be dubbed as 'the week where the former front-runners fell behind' saw Kimberly, Ruby, Rob and the not too surprising Howard struggle with making their signature biscuits, meaning that pretty much anyone could go. The contestants were worn thin by the traybake of this week - French Classic Tuiles - with most producing ones which either bent, weren't crispy or cooked properly, were overdone or simply sloppy. This meant that the people at the bottom technical were the previous star-bakers: Kimberly and Ruby, along with Howard (of course) who has become pretty much a regular feature in this series for his fumbling concoctions.
However, Howard managed to wriggle his way out of the firing line by producing a Green Tea Biscuit Tower for his show-stopper, which despite being not to Mary's taste, impressed Paul enough, meaning that he just about scraped his way back into the competition. Similarly was the case with Ruby, who after producing some lacklustre biscuits for her signature,
and failing pretty badly with the technical, managed to conjure up a upside-down ice-cream style biscuit tower, with white chocolate and perfectly sublime biscuit texture, which managed to save her from elimination as well. Kimberly, unfortunately struggled and didn't produce a fantastic show-stopper, but no doubt her previous performances made up for an average display this week and the spotlight fell upon Rob. The poor Space Satellite designer didn't manage to wow Mary (in particular) or Paul enough with his Doctor Who-inspired biscuit tower (in the shape of a Darlek)
and the taste wasn't there with the edible glue he used to stick it all together. Additionally, the tower was lacking in wholly edible items altogether, as it turns out most of it wasn't actually made for human consumption. Oh, go figure. This pretty much sealed Rob's fate as he hadn't put in an impressive performance in the previous two tasks to make sure he wouldn't go, therefore he became this week's evictee from the big white tent. Christine managed to win Star Baker this week with her clock tower-inspired biscuit tower which was beautifully envisioned and designed to absolute perfection.
Things seemed to be going well for Frances this week, as her signature biscuit creation (a mixture of millionaires shortbread) was a hit,
and she didn't do too bad on the technical either, scoring 3rd I believe. However, Frances, who is known for her elaborate designs which don't always pay off, managed to make her menagerie of biscuits tower fall over (several times) with only host Mel to hold it to keep it standing (which didn't last long).
Therefore, technically failing to produce a biscuit tower which stood up, Frances eliminated her chances of being crowned the coveted Star Baker. Boo hoo. So, with Rob now gone, who do you think will be next to go, bearing in mind next week's challenge is Sweet Dough. Personally, I'm wondering how long Howard can last considering his track record but he's become sort of a loveable feature that I just can't bear to be rid of him.
But taking this week into account, it looks like no one is truly safe from disaster and looking at the teaser for next week, Sweet Doughs looks set to test many a baker.
