The Top 10 Spencer Lines [From Pretty Little Liars]

Spencer Hastings. Smart, sassy and endlessly sarcastic. Over the course of six seasons Spencer has had some truly hilarious and hard-hitting lines that we can all relate to, and, as promised, this PLL gal is next up on our list. Check out our other editions of this feature, below (I'll add them as they become available): Hanna Marin // Aria Montgomery // Emily Fields // Mona Vanderwaal // Alison DiLaurentis. Once again, it was pretty difficult to devise this line-up as Spencer is a one-woman sass machine, but we think we've got it. So, grab your red trench coat and put on your Ali mask and let's get this show on the road.

10: #TeamSparia

The ongoing girlmance (what's the equivalent for bromance? womance? who knows) between Spencer and Aria has cropped up at various intervals throughout the seasons, but it is perhaps this slight moment of friendship that has the most emotional endearment. There are always the little moments where Spencer acknowledges Aria's bravery and abilities whilst being short and often underestimated, and it is this respect and validation that she gives her friend and her achievements that is the most heart-warming. Thanks Spencer, for noticing us shorties. [Episode 2x25]

9: Spencer & Mental Health

If there's one thing that PLL does, it's that it often includes a variety of storylines and creates diverse characters and struggles with complex real-life issues (from sexuality to eating disorders), and there focus on mental health is no different. Spencer is a character who, especially in the early seasons, has a lot of pressure to succeed (from her family and outside sources) and season 3 was the season where Spencer pretty much lost it, and who can blame her. The girl had it rough. If being constantly harassed, cyber-bullied and stalked (not to mention being almost killed by Mona) wasn't enough, then we're betting seeing your long time love allegedly dead (again, thanks Mona) in a forest would pretty much do it. In one of the most emotional and superbly acted scenes from the serious, Spencer hits the truth ball home with simply asking: how do you get past all this? How do you keep going when there doesn't seem to be any reason to? This is why it deserves its rightful place at number nine. [Episode 3x22]

8: Spoby Dick

Oh, snarky Spencer, we do love you. Every inch as academic and reflective as you'd expect a quote from Spencer to be, this perhaps sums up her character the most whilst also having a bit of fun with the dialogue. Oh what a joy it must be to write for the characters of PLL. There needn't be much else said about this line. It sort of does itself justice. [Episode 3x13]

7: Don't we all?

Whether it be a relationship, academic or career success, or even just anything you're afraid won't last and that you will somehow fuck up, this quote has meaning for all of us. Because let's face it, we've all been this person. Although of course, if you're Spencer, there's a highly likely chance that something will blow up, but it might be something like a house. Sorry Cavanaugh residence. [Episode 1x09]

6: Renewable energy

Always looking towards the practical, this isn't a bad suggestion by everyone's favourite brainiac, and we're betting it would be much more economical, as Mona has quite a few chips on her shoulder to fuel it (although, can we really blame her?). There have been many quotes by Spencer and Aria over the years about Mona and one of our favourites has to be the "This is Mona, she's been lying since she was a fetus". So there you go, two fav quotes for the price of one. We're all about the giving. [Episode 2x23]

5: Han(d)na Grenade

Well, you can't say that the statement isn't accurate. Hanna does, at times - as we have observed in our Top 10 Hanna post - not really prove herself to be the master of subtle action and will often favour the more extreme course of action. Spencer naturally highlights this in a simple but hilarious way, although we do love the blonde bombshell. 10 points to the House of Spencer for this witty line.  [Episode 3x03]

4: A Dramatic Entrance

Well, the first rule of PLL school probably should be that everyone needs to announce themselves when they are about to enter somewhere (here's looking at you, Mona) but of course, no one does. Which results in a lot of apprehensive faces and scared shots of PLL cast faces whenever they hear a noise, which is understandable when you have a murderer running around who seemingly wants to chop you up into little doll pieces. Yikes, Shaggy. Regardless, this quote is one of our all time faves, just missing the top 3.   [Episode 4x11]

3: The Nutty Professor

Let's all just take a moment of silence to appreciate this quote. OK, done? Look at Spencer coming out with those quick-witted lines like she was born to make sarcastic comments. Perhaps the best thing about this though is the follow up, when Ezra calls Aria and Spencer replies "Oh, did he find his nuts?" Pure. Genius. Even the imagery of Ezra as a squirrel is beyond hilarious that this definitely deserves its place at 3. We'll never get that image out of our heads. Soz, Ian Harding.  [Episode 3x05]

2: True if you're Xena & Gabrielle

Even from the pilot episode, Spencer attracted our attention from this effortless line that was said in retaliation to her sister, Melissa, and we still haven't got over it. While we're not sure we agree with Spencer on this one, there is something to be said about the concept of hope and eternal misery and we'd sure love to hear her explain it for hours on end, as only a true Hastings could. Regardless, this is one of the most memorable and really resonates with the tone of the series and the events that follow. [Episode 1x01]

1: The Eternal Optimist

And as we sail into the number 1 spot it appears we've landed on the existential crisis Island. Population: you. This probably hits home for anyone who has ever suffered with anxiety or any other relatable mental illness, and for those of you who simply overworry sometimes. Because truly, why enjoy the now when you could be worrying about the future? Let's all just take time to assume the fetal position and rock slowly back and forth instead. Because that definitely solves everything, yep. [Episode 2x10]

That concludes our list for the Top 10 Spencer Lines, but what are your sassy sarcastic favs? What would have been crowned the top of your list? Let us know in the comments!
