The Big Bang Theory - Season 7, Episode 3 'The Scavenger Vortex' [Review + Recap]

With the seventh season fully underway, episode 3 of The Big Bang Theory was all to do with Scavenger hunting - yay! The episode kicks off with made-from-kittens-and-rainbows Raj, being disappointed that his friends didn't attend his murder mystery party a week ago. The gang express their disinterest in the event and Raj says that he won't be organising any more murder mystery parties - only to reveal that he's organised something even 'better.' Cue protestation and sighing from the group (especially Sheldon), until Raj reveals it's going to be a Scavenger hunt, like they all did at their Universities. Leonard shows interest until Howard quips that Princeton isn't a 'real college,' that is until Sheldon says he was going to say the same thing about MIT. You can always count on Sheldon to sneak in a remark at the end.

Penny shows interest in the game, however everyone suggests that she may not be smart enough to play, as the games focus around puzzles and logic. Back in Leonard and Sheldon's apartment, Sheldon has gone full survival mode and packed a rucksack filled with all the things he might need - including a bowling ball. Oh dear, but we did say that Sheldon would probably take this very seriously. Raj then puts on the most bizarre display of special effects, light flickering and showmanship to introduce his scavenger hunt, much to Amy's apparent delight, as well as Sheldon.

Bernadette however looks pretty frightened whilst Raj is setting off his effects. As usual, Penny looks bewildered. And I thought it couldn't get any funnier after Raj and Howards 'special moment' in the last episode. Then, we come down to picking teams. Obviously, no-one wants Penny on their team, considering her a 'liability' (which Penny manages to use correctly in a sentence - you go girl) which leaves them to picking out names from a hat. Penny is obviously annoyed at Leonard, who didn't want to do couples, so instead, Sheldon picks Penny's name, leaving them as a team. Leonard is with Bernadette, and Amy is with Howard.

The first game is assembling a puzzle to reveal a location - Penny gets this straight away (revealing it to be the comic book store), but unfortunately Sheldon wants to complete the whole puzzle first. The other teams get the clue as well, and everyone rushes over there. Meanwhile, Amy and Howard discuss how they've never really spent time together, and Amy condoles Howard over not being with Bernadette. However, surprise, surprise, Howard is not too upset as, we all know, Bernadette is one feisty lady and apparently gets really competitive. Oh dear, I have a feeling Leonard may struggle.

And, just as predicted, Leonard is struggling to cope with Bernadette's demanding atttitude and take-no-prisoners mindset. Amy and Howard discuss their interests and find they both have a mutual infatuation with Neil Diamond's music, and begin to sing along in the car. Oh sweet lord, their enthusiastic singing and Amy's headshaking will literally make you laugh your head off. Amy and Howard are first to arrive at the comic book store, as Raj and Stuart have a little chat about Stuart's usual loneliness. They get their clue from a card-board cut-out of the Riddler; Leonard and Bernadette arrive soon after. Penny and Sheldon are last to arrive, but with the help of Sheldon, they get the clue first. Amy and Howard follow soon after, while Bernadette and Leonard are last to guess.

This leaves Bernadette to take out her anger on Leonard who pleads that he has asthma, and can't run fast enough to catch up with them. I can't help but think that Leonard should have probably stuck with Penny for this one. Meanwhile, Sheldon and Penny have arrived at Caltech, in the Geology department, and begin to look at rocks for the next clue. Sheldon goes into a long-winded explanation of how he reached the conclusion that the clue meant the Geology department. He eventually finishes, and Penny notices a poster for the Rolling Stones. She deduces that the underneath the stone is actually underneath the poster, and finds the next clue.

Unfortunately, we all know Sheldon doesn't care about anyone's input other than himself, so when she offers to explain how she reached her conclusion, Sheldon says 'no one like a know-it-all.' Don't worry Penny, you got that clue all by yourself, and considering Sheldon's lack-of-touch with popular music, he would never have got there on his own. Meanwhile, Leonard is trying to patch things up with Penny via text, and his willingness to give up angers Bernadette, who lies than Penny has been calling him a pussy. This spurs Leonard on; meanwhile, Amy and Howard are rocking out in the car to Neil Diamond again. Oh those kids. Sheldon and Penny eventually arrive at their next destination, only for it to be a bowling alley. Sheldon, who packed his trusting bowling ball for this occasion, is greatly pleased. Amy and Howard arrive at the Geology department, but are too busy performing their own renditions of Neil Diamond's songs to really focus properly.

Eventually, Penny and Sheldon, and Bernadette and Leonard, arrive back at the apartment, (in the laundry room) and discover bags of dirty clothes. It is revealed that there is a 'spot' on Sheldon's shirts, leaving everyone to conclude that it is referring to 'Sheldon's spot' on the sofa. Bernadette, Leonard and Penny all jet up the stairs like they are competing in the Olympics, leaving Sheldon to pre-soak his shirts. The three all claw their way past each other, with Penny reaching the spot first, as Leonard dives his way across the sofa and they nug and tackle each other away. However, there is nothing in the spot, and out comes Raj from the back in a dressing gown holding a glass.

He (incredibly stupidly) reveals that they 'are all winners' and that he hid coins in each of their pockets before the game. He then insults Penny who tells him to 'run' and 'run back to India' whilst sporting a stern glare. He does so, meeting Sheldon on the stairs, who is happy that he has a shiny new coin. Bless him, Sheldon is so sweet. The pair who never manage to get back to the apartment are Howard and Amy, who have abandoned the competition for a chance to sing Neil Diamond Karaoke at a bar. Oh god. The episode ends with Amy and Howard jumping in the air at the end of the rendition. Well, that was one big whirlwind of cut-throat scavenging and Sheldon simplicity. Not to mention lots of Neil Diamond. So much. The episode was fairly fun and entertaining, and so far, the season is on track to have the highest rate of viewers yet. It was interesting to see the whole gang joining in competitive sport (similarly to the great paintball battle before, as well as the pie-eating contest, and the pictionary which Sheldon failed miserably at). The synopsis for the next episode revolves around Amy ruining a game for Sheldon, who seeks revenge, Raj and Stuart exploring online dating, and Leonard discovering something that may change his relationship with Penny. So, there looks to be lots to look forward to in the next episode. But how did you find this episode? Did you enjoy the manic scavenger hunting?
