If however, you haven't watched the Season 6 finale, I do have to questions your intentions for even clicking on this article in the first place. In any case, watch, and then come back and have a read.
Yes, everything looked great and magical when the Season 6 Finale set off, which is a sure tell sign that something bad is going to happen in the land of TV crime dramas. Just as Rick and Kate set off to receive their marriage license, they arrive at the centre, and shock, horror - Kate is already married. Unbeknownst to the groom and indeed, the bride, Kate got married to a dodgy college fling about 15 years ago, named Rogan O'Leary. The two, now desperate to actually make their vows in 3 days, hire a lawyer who says they need to find Rogan and get him to sign the divorce papers, or they can't get married. Cue Kate, who sets off to Rogan's home town to try and locate him. Sure enough, she does - but Rogan isn't exactly a prince Charming and is in the middle of a fight with his girlfriend, who he doesn't want to commit to, and who he stole money off of.
Kate tells Rogan about their marriage, and he rather reluctantly agrees to sign the divorce papers if she breaks into his sort of ex-girlfriend's car and steals a garage door opener. She does so, and as she arrives to return it to Rogan and get him to sign the papers, he is kidnapped from his house by masked assailants. Needless to say, Kate is pretty distraught. Meanwhile in New York, things aren't exactly going well for Team Castle either, the venue has apparently suffered damage after playing host to a circus troupe, and now they have no where to hold their wedding. Cue panic. Fortunately, Alexis and Martha arrive with the suggestion that they hold it at their house in the Hamptons. Castle says he will go to help Kate find Rogan so that they can get married, and off he goes.
Arriving in Rogan's town, Castle and Beckett approach the ex-ish girlfriend and ask her what sort of trouble he might be in, and she claims that he wanted her laptop right before he was kidnapped. She also reveals that Rogan knew about the marriage with Beckett, but has been spinning the story as if Beckett was his wife in a coma, to avoid having to commit to anyone. Sleazy. Needless to say, Beckett isn't impressed.
The two go to Rogan's place to try and look for clues, but they are greeted by a Biker Gang who says Rogan owns them money and they want it now (all $5,000 of it) and that the two have 12 hours to get it together. They say they stole a stripper's phone for Rogan, but when the two go to question the stripper she says that her phone wasn't stolen. Afterwards, more disaster for Kate ensues when Laine rings to tell Kate that her wedding gown was ruined from a burst pipe in her apartment. Things just aren't really going well for those two, are they? Rick manages to console Kate by insisting that their love story needs a few challenges along the way, as that's what great love stories have.
Beckett and Castle figure out that the stripper's phone (with help from the Precinct) contained some sordid pictures of a pastor on it and that it seems that Rogan may have wanted to blackmail the pastor - thus giving him motive for kidnapping. They arrive at the church, where the pastor reveals that it was the stripper who was initially blackmailing him, until Rogan got his hands on the photos and insisted that if he gave him $25,000 then he would never speak of the photos again and it would all become a distant memory. The pastor reveals that he had every intention of paying Rogan, producing a money bag from behind a table. The two figure out that Sapphire (the stripper) might have had Rogan kidnapped for muscling in on her blackmail operation.
They trace the operation to a barn and discover two armed guards outside, and sneaking past them, they find Rogan inside, tied up. Kate tries to get him to sign the papers, but he refuses until they are safe. They realise that Rogan took more photos on the phone, and that one of them was of a fugitive mobster, and the three quickly try to escape the barn, realising the danger they are in. Unfortunately, they don't get far as they are surrounded by mobsters. The fugitive mobster arrives and threatens to kill Kate if Rogan doesn't tell him where the pictures are. Castle interferes and insists they can take him to the pictures, and so the gang ends up back at Rogan's apartment, where fortunately, the biker gang is waiting. Kate says to the biker gang that if they capture the mobster and hand him in to the police, they can keep all of the $100,000 dollar reward. The biker gang agrees. Rogan eventually signs the divorce papers, and reconciles with his girlfriend.
Back in the Hamptons, everyone is arriving at the wedding venue and Kate looks dazzling in her dress. Laine and Kate talk about her wedding, when Martha arrives and gives Kate her mother's blue earrings. Kate is overjoyed. Rick rings, and says he will be there in 20 minutes. After his phone call, Rick notices a black SUV following him. An hour has passed and still no sign of Rick, and Laine, Kate, Martha and Alexis are worried. Kate receives a phone call and looks distressed. She goes to the scene of a roadside accident and looks on in horror as Rick's car is engulfed in flames - leaving his fate uncertain.
The episode ushered in many new questions and presented a life or death cliffhanger (although, we're pretty sure he is still alive, you know, with the Seventh season and all). In true Castle style, we never can quite catch a glimpse of the fairytale wedding, but let us hope that we eventually get to see it sometime in Season 7, evidently after Beckett rescues Castle from whoever has kidnapped him (we're suspicious of the people in the SUV). The episode is pretty heart-breaking, especially as everyone was so geared up towards the wedding and it turns out to be pretty much the worse day of poor Beckett's life (we're putting it up there with being shot at Montgomery's funeral, almost being killed while impersonating that assassin, her mother dying and almost being killed by 3XK and that tiger). So, the inevitable question on everyone's lips is undoubtedly what has happened to Rick? We're pretty sure he's been kidnapped by the people in the SUV who have then dumped his car, but who might they be? Bracken's revenge? 3XK? What remaining enemies are out there in the land of Castle? Place your bets now as we drudge through the long summer to find out what happened to the infamous Rick Castle.
